The building housing the official offices/rooms of the municipality of Fjotland was built in 1895 in cooperation with the the bank, Fjotland sparebank. At the time neither the local municipal government or the bank had their own facilities. Fjotland was separated as a municipality in 1858. From that time they rented space from Isak Netland who had a general store at Fjotland.

A second story was added in 1934. This was used by the custodian. His job was to heat up the building before meetings held by the formannskap (executive committee) and the kommunestyre (municipal council) and when the bank had office hours every Saturday. When school classes where also held there, he had the same tasks for the school.

When there was a church service on Sundays, he had the job of making coffee and boiling eggs that the churchgoers could buy. The municipal hall was also used for trials. A separate “bench” that was used in court trials, can be seen in the building.

When the municipality of Fjotland became part of Kvinesdal Municipality in 1963, it was no longer used for municipal purposes. The bank continued its activities until 1991.

In 1993 Fjotland Bygdemuseum was given the right to use the building. At that time Fjotland sparebank had moved its facilities to Kvinlog. Fjotland Bygdemuseum could use the building including the basement. The room used for the meetings of the municipal council was furnished as it had been when in it was use.

Now things have been collected from all of Kvinesdal Municipality and some things from other places. There are also some things from the mining community at Knaben.
